Dead in the Water Do or die Dream Chasers Fifth Son

Barbara Fradkin is a child psychologist with a fascination for why we turn bad. She recently scaled back her full-time practice as a child psychologist in order to devote more time to her first passion, writing. She has always had an affinity for the dark side, and her two dozen short stories haunt various magazines and anthologies such as the Ladies Killing Circle series. She is a two-time prizewinner in Storyteller Magazine's annual Great Canadian Short Story Contest, as well as a four-time nominee  for the Crime Writers of Canada Arthur Ellis Award for Best Short Story, including "Voices from the Deep" in 2007.

Fifth SonHowever, she is best known for her award-winning police procedural series featuring the exasperating, quixotic Ottawa Police Inspector Michael Green, whose passion for justice and love of the hunt often interfere with family, friends and police protocol. There are currently six books in the series, of which the second, Once Upon a Time was shortlisted for the Arthur Ellis award for Best Novel in 2003. Her late husband's experiences in war crimes prosecutions gave her the impetus, as well a lot of the background and insight for that book. Fifth Son (2004), a story about family secrets, and Honour Among Men (2006) a reflection on the psychological toll of peacekeeping, both won the Arthur Ellis Best Novel Award in their respective years.

Dream ChasersThe sixth in the series, entitled Dream Chasers just hit the bookstore shelves in September 2007. This time Barbara probes the world of elite young athletes, drugs and teenage sexuality. Having a soft spot for both hockey and young people, the topic was a natural.
